Description
Into the Midnight Garden is a collection of whimsical images and accompanying poems. Although it is appropriate for children it is meant for a wider audience and it is not a typical story book with pictures. Adults may enjoy both the images and the thoughtful lyrical responses. Children may use the colourful art as a jumping off point to create their own magical stories.
Edmonton artist Barbara Hartmann has created visual stories of wonder and delight. The images include mysterious flora and fauna – flying animals that leap from magical gardens into skies glowing with stars.
The images were inspired by the sense of wonder she feels when reading fairy tales and fantasy. She loves the idea of flying creatures and mystical gardens. The luminous quality of light and colour in each watercolour painting highlights the magic.
Singer/songwriter, Jessica Heine, has responded to the paintings with lyrical thoughts that complement the pictures in a personal and completely different way.
Together, the poems and paintings provide a complexity which inspire the imagination.
About the Illustrator and the Poet
Edmonton illustrator Barbara Hartmann loves a good story – both written and visual. She creates whimsical, narrative images for cards, posters and children’s books and her work graces the walls of paediatric units in three Edmonton hospitals.
Her picture book, Bygumbo, written by Gwen Molnar, won the Book of the Year 2019 awarded by the Book Publishers of Alberta Association in the Children and Youth category.
Canadian singer/songwriter Jessica Heine delights audiences with her charming songwriting and a dynamic voice that shakes rooms and warms hearts. Taking the stage, her genuine smile makes her instantly likeable, but when she starts to sing you know you are in love. She’s a classically trained vocal performer but her passion is the power of song, shared through the folk tradition. With Into the Midnight Garden, Jessica uses her clever wordsmithing in a new and exciting way to match poems with Barbara Hartmann’s magical images.
